• Safety equipment complies with relevant statutory requirements and is only used in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations.
• The nursery owner is specifically responsible for safety within the group; safety of the children is of paramount importance
• The front door is locked at all times .
• Parents/carers are not permitted to bring vehicles onto the driveway at dropping off and picking up times
• No child will be left alone in a room at any time
• All children will be under direct adult supervision at all times
• The Nursery will meet at least the minimum requirements for adult: child ratios (0 /1 years is 1:3, 1 / 2 years is 1:3, and 2/3 years is1:5 we have 1j4 315 years 1:8 and we have 1:5) min of two staff per room.
• All adults will be informed of the arrival and departure procedures. There will be at least one member of staff at the door during these periods to ensure that no child "escapes" or leaves with the wrong adult.
• The comfort of children and adults within the setting is important, and heating, lighting and ventilation are constantly checked.
• Risk assessment: the environment and equipment are checked regularly for potential safety hazards, and any necessary action is taken during the same day. Any hazards are recorded on the nursery's hazard form that is kept in the Premises binder
• Covers are in place on radiators covers and are only removed for cleaning when nursery is closed.
• Equipment will be checked regularly for damage, and broken items discarded
• There will be space for children and adults to move safely and freely from one activity to another
• Electrical points will have safety plugs fitted
• There will be no trailing electrical wires
• Dangerous items, e.g. cleaning fluids, are stored according to Health and Safety requirements
• Adults will not walk about with hot liquids; staff /visitors' drinks must be placed on high shelves
• Children are not allowed in the kitchen at all
• The kitchen door must be closed during the session.
Security
• The front door Is locked unless children, parents/carers or staff are leaving or entering the building
• Any unknown individuals on the premises or grounds will be challenged and will not be permitted into the building All members of staff are responsible for establishing his/her intent and must act accordingly.
• If an unknown person arrives at the door stating that s/he has come to collect a particular child, the member of staff concerned must telephone the child's parents/carers to seek confirmation. The child will not be permitted to leave with the unknown person until such confirmation has been received.
• The daybook containing parents'/carers' telephone numbers and information about special arrangements for collecting children is kept on the windowsill beside the front door.
• in the event of a child not being collected, calls will be made to emergency contacts as specified on the child's enrolment form. If no contact has been made with the parent or carer, Social Services will be contacted.
First Aid & use & storage of medication
• The nursery manager is a trained first aider.
• The nursery manager is responsible for maintaining the First Aid kit
• The First Aid kit is appropriately stocked according to Health and Safety requirements
• The First Aid kit is kept kitchen and office and AIM file is kept in the office.
• All adults will know where the First Aid kit and file is kept
• All medication will be locked up in office parents will have to fill in a form and only given if very clear instructions clear labelling but we do not like to do this at all.
INFECTION CONTROLE
All adults working within the nursery will ensure that normal hygiene precautions are taken to prevent and control the spread of any illness whether it originates from an infestation (e.g. worms), a bacterial or a viral source. These infections include the usual childhood illnesses, as well as hepatise B, meningitis and food poisoning such as salmonella and listeria, or AIDS and HIV.
The aim of this code is to eliminate opportunities for disease to develop or spread with in the group and to ensure, as far as possible, a safe environment for children and adults with allergies. Children attending the nursery will be taught the importance of basic hygiene and good habits especially with regards to washing hands before eating food and after going to the toilet, being in the garden or handling animals.
